| Many
product shots are cut out from the background. Know as silhouettes
(or silos for short) or clipping paths, these additions can help
a product stand out. When requesting a silo it is important to
know exactly what the use is for. There are two distinct types
of silos. The first and most common is known as a clipping path.(see
far right image) This is a vector based path embedded into the
image file that determines which parts of the photo are printed
and which parts are clipped out or removed. Clipping paths are
the most common and versatile way to silo an image, however,
by definintion, they must have a hard edge to them. On certain
products with soft edges this can present an issue. For products
such as these we generally recommend simply dropping the background.
Commonly referred to as a "drop white,"(see middle
image) this enables us to feather or soften the transition between
the product and the background. Since the white background is
actually part of the image file, it can only be placed on white
within the page. If you plan to place the product on a color
or on top of another image then use a clipping path. |
